Deep Time
For this long-term exhibit, I collaborated with paleontologists, curators, builders, and sound engineers to bring the story of Nevada’s ichthyosaur fossils to life. My research involved visiting the vault at a natural history museum to study the specimens up close, ensuring the final visuals were both accurate and engaging.

Drawing on the same tools used by scientists—LiDAR and photogrammetry—I replicated points to craft 3D animations that feel both scientifically grounded and elegantly ethereal. The result is a dynamic display that balances realism with a touch of spectacle, immersing visitors in the deep-time narrative of these ancient sea dragons.

DAZZLEDazzle is an art piece transforming the 1200-foot long facade of the new San Diego Airport Rental Car Center into a landmark mural. Dazzle Camouflage was used in World War I to obfuscate the speed and direction of warships, making it extremely difficult for opossing submarines to aim their torpetos. The camoflage concept was expanded in this massive landmark installation, giving the building dynamic angles, dazzling animation and bold elements seen daily by hundred thousands of motorists on the adjacent Interstate 5 Freeway.

The E-Ink panels had unique specifications, and Ivan used Processing to create a GUI tool to help bridge the gap between Engineering and Ideation.
The processing sketch was capable of getting live animation from After Effects, Quicktime videos, and export them out as JSON files for the engineers at E-Ink.

		DoubleData
DoubleData Wall is a commissioned Art Installation for the DoubleData Exhibit at Art Center College of Design. The interactive light sculputre has 2,410 RGB LED Lights controlled by custom Processing Code and an LED Controller.
The piece provocates users to interact in several programs. The first one visualizes WIFI traffic as particles flowing through the air. The second program has particles that search and form the DoubleData Logo. Program 3 is a particle playground for the audience, it gives them several minutes to play, pose, take pictures, and have a one-on-one connection with the exhibition. And finally, the last program allows the audience to add to the piece by tweeting a message to #datavizartcenter

    Process

In Pasadena, students had the tools necessary to communicate, ideate, brainstorm, explore, sketch, and experiment.

Brainstorming soley on a computer can impede its usefulness. That’s why students printed and organized all their thoughts and references onto boards. Students also built physical and virtual models to explore its space, spatial design, audience flow ect…
Students also visited and analyzed Desert X installations. Feeling the precense of a large installation played a critical part in decision making.

For quick ideation, students used whiteboards to draw their ideas out, often leading to discussion and analysis–having all the ideas be physical and present, they where able to quickly make decisions or combine ideas.

    	Berlin
In Berlin, the students finalized their narrative. Since the sun is the most apparent agent in Burningman, they decided to worship it as much as possible. To respect the sun, but also enjoy it’s ecliptic trek and sunset, and virtual sunset in how it lives in our memories.
During the day, the shade under the steps can be used for shelter from the elements. Once the temperatures subside, people can bask, contemplate, relax on the steps and enjoy the sunset. Once the sun is below the horizon, the sun virtually continues on the LED wall.
Students then presented their narrative for funding and support at the Brandenburger Tor Gate’s Immersive Media Room.

Mediatecture
Mediatecture is an upper level, multidisciplinary course at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena California, that has helped redifine the Graphic Design Department.

The class helps students explore the boundaries of new media, problem solving, and human centered design. The class is often paired with higher term classes where they can have space and time to innovate and experiment with new ideas. Instead of relying on one tool, the students use a wide variety of tools including Processing, Arduino + Sensors, Kinect, MadMapper, OpenTSPS, Projectors, and the adobe suite.
